Youth Outreach Program
Providing alcohol and other drug prevention services
on Fremont and Union City campuses for over 20 years

Community Counseling’s school-based Youth Outreach Program (YOP) has a long history. With funding appropriated in 1976 by the Board of Supervisors, the Youth Program was established with a core of six community-based programs throughout Alameda County. Since 1980, primary funding for CCEC’s youth program has come from a drug abuse prevention contract with the Alameda County Behavioral Health Care Services Department of Alcohol and Drug Services. As County funds decrease, youth programs have augmented their funding through grants and other sources like schools’ SIP funds and school district Drug-Free Schools funds.

The Youth Program has been providing alcohol and other drug prevention services on Fremont and Union City campuses for over 20 years. Increasing the developmental assets or resiliency of a child, including self-esteem, has been shown to be a major component of helping youth avoid future problems with drugs and other negative situations like violence and teen pregnancy. Our short-term group program is a strategy which can assist a child in learning appropriate ways to handle stress and anger, as well as learning good social skills that enhance working and playing relationships with peers.

The goal of the program (YOP) is to increase the average developmental assets of youth in our programs through the commitments and actions of adults, so as to have youth believe that the school community truly cares about them. And as a result, to prevent or postpone the inappropriate use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs, and the associated costs, by Alameda County children, adolescents, age six through eighteen and to increase thriving through school success, helping others, valuing diversity, resisting danger and overcoming adversity.
